Greatest Drummers: Neil Peart - Joe’s Garage July 19th

Well...there was no way I was gonna wrap up this week-long look at some of the greatest Rock drummers of all-time without including the late Neil Peart of Rush. To me...Neal forever lives at the top of the drumming mountain. When discussing greatest drummers...I always throw out the Prince analogy when it comes to Neal. I consider Prince to be one of the...if not THE greatest guitar players of all time. Why? Because he could play any style...any chord...any riff...any solo...and play it just as well (if not usually better) than the original. The same goes for Neal. Yes...he played a very specific style with Rush due to the makeup of the band and the subsequent compositions of the music. But do you think he couldn’t play jazz...country...hip hop...funk...blues...classical...etc. as well as (if not better than) any other drummer on the planet? My answer is a resounding “no.” And something that casual fans might not be aware of...he also wrote the majority of lyrics to all of Rush’s songs. I was fortunate to see him play live on a number of occasions...and had a difficult time focusing my attention anywhere but on the drum kit. There will never be another one like The Professor!
