Greatest Drummers: Keith Moon - Joe's Garage July 18th

Keith Moon of The Who easily makes my top five rock drummers of all-time with his thunderous, renegade style of playing by feel as opposed to traditional discipline. Another thing that set Moon apart from other greats of his era....he HATED drum solos. At one infamous performance, Townsend and Entwistle stopped playing to allow Keith to momentarily shine in his own spotlight. Moon only continued playing for a few more seconds...and then stopped...exclaiming out loud that “drum solos are boring!” He was truly one of a kind...who allowed his personal demons to consume him at much to young of an age. For something a little different...instead of featuring Moon’s playing, I’m featuring the title track from Roger Daltrey’s 1985 solo album “Under A Ranging Moon”...co-written by John Parr as a moving tribute to his late friend Keith. The following drummers all contributed solos to the track as a waying of paying tribute to one of the greatest ever.

  • Martin Chambers (The Pretenders)
  • Roger Taylor (Queen)
  • Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Black Sabbath)
  • Stewart Copeland (The Police)
  • Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr’s son / Drummer for The Who since 1996)
  • Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake, & Palmer)
  • Mark Brzezicki (Big Country)
