Greatest Bass Players: Paul McCartney - Joe's Garage July 23rd

Paul McCartney

While he is most definitely the most famous of all bass players, he doesn’t often get listed as one of the “greatest” bass players of all time...which I think is a shame. Starting during his earliest days with The Beatles in 1962, McCartney created sounds and melodies on that famous ‘61 Höfner that few had ever even considered. As opposed to simply providing the compliment to the rhythm section with Ringo...Paul created counter-melodies...and in some cases (think “Day Tripper”) lead bass riffs that were truly pioneering for their day. Evolving as the Beatles evolved...whether it was a solid straight-four in the pocket...or a sweeping, moving, counter-melody to Harrison’s brilliant guitar work... McCartney will always be known as one of the most solid, creative, and versatile bass players of all-time. Enjoy this solo performance from 1993 featuring another of his all-time greatest Beatles-era bass parts.
