Back yard fireworks are a thing. They’ve been a thing for as long as I can remember and they’ll still be a thing for years to come. And yes...they’re almost as polarizing as a presidential election. You’re either on one side or the other...with very little middle ground. Those in favor will tell you that it’s a fun, annual, family tradition to be enjoyed by those of all ages. Those against will counter with the traumatization of beloved pets, veterans with PTSD, sleeping kids, work schedules, or just the simple fact that they don’t enjoy having their neighborhood filled with the sounds of a combat zone that can last well into the night.

I understand both sides...and believe that there is actually some middle ground. My beloved mutt Maddie HATED those big booms and would hide in the basement until the last roman candle had flamed out. My little kids had bedtimes. My wife and I have had work in the morning. But we also enjoyed those driveway displays that permeated our neighborhood on an annual basis. And as my little kids became bigger kids...they enjoyed them as much as anyone. My suggestion...go out and actually talk to your neighbors. Listen to their concerns...explain you plans...and come to some sort of compromise that will be agreeable to all involved parties. Yes...that might mean cutting off your show a little earlier than you had hoped. (we had neighbors this year who went well past midnight...which is just too damn late) It might mean that your neighbor might have to send their pet to stay with a family member or friend for the night. Bottom line is that everyone...regardless of which side you’re on...should be entitled to an enjoyable 4th. If nothing else...it might give you a chance to meet that neighbor that you’ve only waved at up until this point.
