The death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday means that only four former presidents remain alive.

Carter was 100 years, 89 days old when he died on Dec. 29. He was the only president alive who served in office during the 1970s after the death of Gerald Ford in 2006. After leaving office on Jan. 20, 1981, Carter’s post-presidential life spanned 43 years, 344 days.

Now, only four former presidents are alive, and only one was in office during the 20th century. So who are the oldest remaining living presidents?

Joe Biden

Joe Biden is the oldest serving U.S. president. He turned 82 on Nov. 20, and when he leaves office on Jan. 20, he will become the oldest living former president.

His record as the oldest serving chief executive could be surpassed by Donald Trump in a few years.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is now the oldest living former president. The 78-year-old will hold that distinction until Jan. 20, when he takes the oath of office for his second term. Trump will become the first president to be elected to nonconsecutive terms since Grover Cleveland won the 1892 election.

Trump will also become the oldest person ever sworn into office, breaking the mark held by Biden, who was 78 when he was inaugurated in January 2021.

Trump turns 79 on June 14, 2025. He would break the record of being the oldest U.S. president on Aug. 15, 2028.

George W. Bush

Born on July 6, 1946. George W. Bush is only 22 days younger than Trump. The 43rd president has lived quietly in Texas since leaving office on Jan. 20, 2009.

When not making paid speeches or solidifying his legacy with the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Bush took up painting and published a book of portraits of immigrants, USA Today reported. He also played golf and attended Texas Rangers baseball games.

“I think part of having a fulfilling life is to be challenged,” Bush said, according to the Miller Center. “I’m challenged on the golf course, I’m challenged to stay fit, and I’m challenged by my paintings … I am happy.”

His father, President George H.W. Bush, had held the record for longest living former president until Carter passed him. The 41st president, who died on Nov. 30, 2018, lived 25 years, 314 days after he left office on Jan. 20, 1989. The elder Bush was 94 years, 171 days old when he died, according to People.

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton is the third U.S. president born in 1946. The 78-year-old was born Aug. 19, 1946, and is now the lone surviving president to have served in the 20th century.

The 42nd president, who left office on Jan. 20, 2001, was admitted to a Washington, D.C. hospital on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever.

Clinton was suffering from the flu and was released from the hospital on Dec. 24.

Barack Obama

Barack Obama, born on Aug. 4, 1961, is the youngest current former president. The 44th president, 63, left office on Jan. 20, 2017.

Obama was the first president to remain in Washington after the end of his term, according to Brittanica. He bought a nine-bedroom home in the capital’s Kalorama neighborhood.

After writing his memoirs -- along with his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama -- Obama has devoted much of his time to the Obama Foundation. He also campaigned for Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign and was a speaker during the 2022 midterms.

Obama also campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris during her failed presidential bid this year.
